Modern Day Cinderella

I grew up believing I couldn’t have it all….I had to choose between a relationship and a career.  I know this seems far fetched but whenever I was with someone I would give up my interests and take on theirs. I would stop writing, creating and being me.

In the last few years the relationships have been few and far between and I have blossomed but I want to believe I can have both.

Growing up I was taught that I was nobody without a man in my life and if my looks went away no one would want me…I know that as an adult these statements should be oblivious but I held on to them convinced that if I was ugly and single I was nobody.

Today women have it all and the choices to go with it including retaining their independence.

Being single does not equate old maid, being married does not signify giving up your passions and some even choose to have the in-between alternative of friends with benefits.

My mother was a die-hard Catholic who was raised by a strict Aunt who portrayed marriage and children as a curse and a blessing.

I’m at a crossroad these days wanting to find someone but at the same time I really don’t want to give up anything.  I truly enjoy having an independent life and I certainly don’t want an old fashion, outdated relationship.

Hopefully as I continue my journey I can find the middle ground.  I must say that for someone raised with extreme values of black & white, right or wrong, left or right, it is difficult to land in the middle but that is where I am aiming to be.  I need to define myself as a Modern Day Cinderella who might or might not meet Prince Charming but in the meantime will not be controlled and will fulfill her dreams.

It’s time for me to create new values that reflect who I am today.

Letting go of the Cinderella Complex.
